Weighted Vest Buyer’s Guide

Choosing exercise gear is never easy, and weighted vests are no exception. You need to worry about more than just the weight – how comfortable each weighted vest will be, how it’ll fit on your body, and what kind of exercise you’ll actually be doing. It’s easy to get caught up in brand hype or a particular feature without realizing that there are other alternatives available, and no weighted vests will be “the best” at everything, especially if you’re hoping to find one that you can adjust to suit each situation.

There are certain things that you should look for when you’re choosing to buy a new weighted vest, especially if you’re trying to find something that’s perfect for a certain type of exercise or a particular body shape. If you buy something without doing research ahead of time, it’s easy to end up with a weights vest that really doesn’t fit your requirements at all.

Are Weighted Vests a Good Idea?

A weighted vest, as the name suggests, places more weight on your body and adds some extra intensity to any kind of movements you make. The idea is quite simple: the more weight you put on your body, the more effective different kinds of exercise will be. This can be anything from running to full-scale weightlifting and training, and many of them are generic enough to work across multiple types of exercise.

That’s not the only time you should use them, though. Many people like to wear an adjustable weighted vest while they’re going regular parts of their routine: tidying up a garden, walking to and from work, or even something as basic as cleaning up their home. It all makes a difference in the amount of calories you’ll burn while doing it.

They’re not perfect for everything, and not every brand is able to provide exactly what you’ll need, though. For example, while major brands like Hyperwear are able to produce dozens of types of vests, smaller companies will have a more limited selection. On the other hand, some of these small companies might produce weighted vests with better features than the larger Hyperwear ranges. Even then, not every exercise is better with a weighted vest, especially if it would cause more problems by getting in your way or slowing you down.

How Heavy Should a Weighted Vest Be?

There’s so single best weighted vest size and weight since it comes down to the individual person’s needs. Some weighted vests will let you remove or add more weight as necessary, but this isn’t always the case, and many vests are built with a pre-set amount of weight. If it’s your first time buying one, this can seem overwhelming, especially if you’re not very familiar with what different amounts of weight feel like.

Always try to go for a weight that’s either exactly what you need, or slightly higher than you’re comfortable wearing. The heavier the weight, the stronger your body will become to counteract it, but the more likely the vest is to hurt you instead. An adjustable vest is often a good choice for beginners since you can reduce the weight if you start to feel like it’s becoming hard to wear or add more once your body adapts.

What Is The Best Weighted Vest For CrossFit?

A CrossFit workout requires a lot of movement, so it’s a good idea to avoid vests that are overloaded with extra weight. A small amount of additional weight can still make a huge difference in long workouts, but a vest that’s too heavy can cause you serious problems in the future. However, the easiest way to find one is to look up a review of a particular vest you’re looking at – many people will mention the exercises they’ve used them for, so you might be able to track down a vest already being used by a lot of CrossFit lovers.

Is Wearing A Weighted Vest All Day Bad?

Yes, definitely. There are two main reasons that it can be a sign of something bad: first of all, if you’re able to wear a vest like this for so long, it’s clearly either too light (in which case it’s hardly the best option for you), or you’re forcing yourself to wear a vest even if it’s hurting you. Secondly, the problem isn’t the vest – it’s the weight. Any kind of extreme weight can cause pain, tiredness, fatigue, or even injuries in the short term, and it’s very rarely worth the risk and pain that it’ll cause you. There’s nothing wrong with wearing a vest like this if you take the weights out, but even then, you’re better off wearing regular clothes and avoiding putting yourself in harm’s way.

If you have a reason to wear the vest for a long period of time (such as having no other way to carry it back home after some time at the gym, or deliberately trying to build up more resistance to that kind of pain in the future), make sure you take it off if you start to hurt. It’s okay to hurt yourself a little bit while working out since that’s often the point, but once it’s causing actual serious pain, then it’s no longer worth the risks. Wearable weights like this can be even more risky since they’re difficult to take off once you start feeling extremely tired.
